Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological
disorder that results from degeneration of neurons in a region of the brain
that controls movement. Parkinson's disease (PD) belongs to a group of
conditions called motor system disorders, which are
the result of the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells.
The primary symptoms of
Parkinson's disease are:
- Tremors or trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw,
and face
- Rigidity, or stiffness of the limbs and trunk
- Bradykinesia, or slowness of movement
- Inability to move (akinesia)
- Postural instability
- Impaired balance and coordination
- Slow movement (bradykinesia)
- A shuffling gait
- Stooped posture
- Foot pain and toe curling
- Difficulty swallowing or chewing
As these symptoms become more
pronounced, patients may have difficulty walking, talking, or completing other
simple tasks. Parkinson’s disease usually affects people over the age of 50.
Early symptoms of PD are subtle and occur gradually. In some people the disease
progresses more quickly than in others.
As the disease progresses, the
shaking, or tremor, which affects the majority of people with Parkinson’s may
begin to interfere with daily activities. Other problems associated with
Parkinson’s include:
- Depression and other emotional
changes
- Difficulty in swallowing, chewing, and speaking
- Urinary problems or constipation
- Skin problems
- Sleep disruptions
There are currently no blood or
laboratory tests that have been proven to help in diagnosing sporadic PD.
Therefore the diagnosis is based on medical history and a neurological
examination. The disease can be difficult to diagnose accurately. Doctors may
sometimes request brain scans or laboratory tests in order to rule out other
diseases.

Exploring the Depths: A 3D 1940 Hike into the Grand Canyon
In
1940, photographer Clyde A. McCoy hiked down the South Kaibab trail at Grand
Canyon National Park making color, stereo photographs as part of a nationwide
project. Two years later he was murdered in a Detroit robbery. In
1996,
Dr. Amundson purchased McCoy’s photograph collection and has been researching
McCoy’s story ever since. This presentation includes a brief biography of
McCoy, an overview of Amundson’s detective-like historical research, and a visual
recreation (in glorious 3D!) of McCoy’s hike using scanned images of digitally
restored slides from the collection.
Michael Amundson is a professor of history at Northern Arizona
University in Flagstaff. A specialist on the history of the American West,
Amundson teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on Arizona and the
Southwest, the American West, U.S. History, American sports history, and the
history of photography.
His
publications include two books on nuclear history and three books focusing on
rephotography in Wyoming. He is currently working on a book about early Edison
recordings featuring the American West. He and his wife, Lauren, live in
Flagstaff with their border collie, Tessa.
Join us for this free presentation on Thursday, March 19th at 10:30 AM. Sun Valley Lodge is located at 12415 N. 103rd Avenue in Sun City. For more details call 623-933-0137.

Sun Valley Lodge Combats Senior Fall Risk with
Workshops
Sun
City, Arizona – Friday, October 10, 2014 – Sun Valley Lodge will be holding
two dynamic workshops focusing on balance and fall
prevention. The events will be held on Thursday October 23rd and Thursday, October 30th at 10:00 AM and will explore strategies to
keep older adults on their feet. Both
sessions are free to the public.
Sun Valley Lodge assisted living director Blanche Forrester will lead the discussions along with physical therapists Jaime Forbes and Colin Gavrila. Both Jaime and Colin work for Phoenix Home Health and regularly see Lodge residents.
The first session will concentrate on understanding the body’s multiple systems – neurological, muscular/skeletal, and cardiopulmonary. We will focus on how they work together and how sensory, motor skills and nervous system change with age. Finally, we will go over functional ambulation requirements and strategies to prevent falls in the home.
The second session will help participants recognize how most falls are the result of interacting risk factors and how to develop strategies to reduce those risks. We will help participants identify strategies and resources that can be used to reduce risk and discuss the use of occupational therapy as a tool to help prevent risks will also be covered.
Free blood pressure screening and free blood sugar tests will also be available at both sessions. Each session will last about an hour with time for questions at the conclusion. Seating for these seminars is free to the public, but limited. Please contact the Lodge at (623) 933-0137 to reserve attendance.

Discover Arizona Opens March 6th
Sun
City, Arizona – Friday, February 14, 2014 – Sun Valley Lodge will
present the first in its four-part Discover Arizona series on Thursday, March 6th
at 10:30 AM. The first program is
entitled “They was Out to Kill Us: The Power Cabin Shootout” and will be
presented by Dr. Heidi Osselaer. Ph.D.
Dr. Osselaer will discuss the
deadliest gunfight in Arizona history.
The event took place in a remote canyon of the Galiuro Mountains in Graham
County in 1918, decades after the frontier had closed. Much of this shootout remains a mystery: Were
the Power boys evading the draft during World War I? Who was ambushed that day,
the lawmen or the Power family? On the surface the story looks like an Old West
shootout, complete with a feud, murder mystery, and conspiracy theories galore,
but it also foreshadows the emergence of a powerful federal government in the
lives of average citizens.
Dr. Osselaer
received her undergraduate degree in history at the University of California,
Berkeley and her doctorate at Arizona State University. In 2009, the University
of Arizona Press published her book, Winning Their Place: Arizona Women in
Politics, 1883-1950, which won two Glyph Awards from the Arizona Book
Publishing Association. She teaches at Arizona State University and serves on
the Executive Board and the Scholars’ Committee of the Arizona Women’s Heritage
Trail. She also serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Arizona
History.
The Discover Arizona series consists of four programs that each feature
a different aspect of Arizona history presented by an accomplished
speaker. Programs
are scheduled for every Thursday in March at 10:30 AM. The series is made possible
through a grant from the Arizona Humanities Council.
All of the programs are free and
open to the public. Sun Valley Lodge is
located at 12415 N. 103rd Avenue in Sun City. For more details please call 623-933-0137.
