Sun Valley Lodge Feeds the Homeless

Sun Valley Lodge employees, as they have done for the past three years, met on Saturday at an urban street corner to feed Phoenix-area homeless.  Close to 400 people in need of a good meal lined up to enjoy hot turkey dinner and receive other provisions necessary for survival.

This tradition was started by SVL food services employees Ollie Washington and David Mead who originally served food out of the back of pickup truck.  It has now grown to include employees from our assisted living and skilled nursing departments, as well as numerous family members and friends of the Lodge.

Jamie Avalla, our Director of Dietary Services, is understandably proud of the efforts started by employees in her department.  “Thanks to the generosity of our residents, staff, and families who donated we were able to make a difference in the lives of many people who desperately need help.  We were able to provide food, drinks, toiletries, blankets, shoes and jackets to distribute to people with real needs.”

Jamie credits the largesse of the Sun Valley Lodge family for making the event such a success.  “I would thank everyone involved and especially acknowledge one of our residents, Dorothy Mills, and our Activities Coordinator Bernadette Gromowski for their monetary donations.  Their generosity helped us take care of more people than ever before.”

If you would like to take part in this program or support the Lodge in any other way, please contact our Development office at (623) 933-0137, extension 129.
