Discover Arizona Opens March 31st and Features Arizona Photographic History

The Sun Valley Lodge will present the first in its five-part Discover Arizona series on Wednesday, March 31st at 10:00 AM. The first program is entitled “Silver Images on Glass Plates – Early Photography in Arizona, 1850-1920” and will be presented by Dr. Jeremy Rowe of Mesa.

Dr. Rowe will discuss how photography has shaped public perception of Arizona and the West. He will present a chronological history of the development of photography in Territorial Arizona and the social and market pressures that influenced the subjects and images. Examples of various formats used and images of daily life, public events, personalities, mining, Native Americans, and the built environment will be included. The images selected to accompany the presentation are high quality copies of original photographs and depict activities in many little known regions of the state, as well as of the development of the camps, forts, and towns throughout the Territory.

Dr. Jeremy Rowe has collected, researched, and written about 19th and early 20th century photographs for twenty-five years. He has written Arizona Photographers 1850 - 1920: A History and Directory and Arizona Real Photo Postcards: A History and Portfolio, and curated exhibitions with many regional museums. He worked with the Library of Congress American Memory project, a digital historic photographic collection, and manages vintagephoto.com. He is the Executive Director of the School of Computing and Informatics at ASU.

The Discover Arizona series consists of five programs that each feature a different aspect of Arizona history presented by an accomplished speaker. The series is made possible through a grant from the Arizona Humanities Council.

Wellness Clinic Helps Residents Remain Vibrant

Beginning in March, Assisted Living Manager and LPN Blanche Forrester will be hosting bi-weekly wellness clinics for Lodge residents. Blanche describes the events as “open discussions about health, opportunities for residents to share concerns, and chances to network with services that may be available to them. Our number one goal is to keep residents healthy and vibrant. This is also great way for me to get to know the needs and concerns of our independent residents.”

The program will include health screenings and presentations by special guests including nutritionists, doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. Contact Blanche at (623) 933-0137 with any questions.
