Volunteer Opportunities at Sun Valley Lodge

As a not-for-profit community, Sun Valley Lodge relies in part on support from the community at large to provide the very best care possible for our Seniors.  One way people contribute is through our volunteer program.  We have dozens of dedicated volunteers who give their time, efforts, and talents to make life better for our residents.  And, they have a great time in the process!

Our volunteers do everything from playing music to reading to serving at our coffee socials.  Our volunteers include retirees, students, families, and church groups.  If you would like to make some new friends and spend some time helping out at the Lodge, give us a call and let us know how you would like to be part of the Sun Valley Lodge family.

Hollywood Choreography

Residents gathered last evening for a lively conversation and a great meal in our Wriston Lounge.  The topic of discussion was classic Hollywood choreography and Jamie and her staff put together a fabulous dinner.  There is never a dull moment at Sun Valley Lodge!

Mike Mankenberg’s tips for staying healthy this flu season

Mike Mankenberg, Sun Valley Lodge Director of Nursing, spends his time keeping his residents healthy and happy.  Here are his tips for staying well this winter ...

Mike Mankenberg’s tips for staying healthy this flu season

1.  Get a flu vaccine. The sooner the better because they take two weeks to start working.

2.  Strongly consider getting pneumonia and whooping cough shots. The pneumonia vaccine can be given anytime during the year and usually one shot will give you lifelong protection.

3.  Wash your hands frequently. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.

4.  Stay rested and strong. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious foods.

5.  Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you are sick, keep your distance from others. If possible, stay at home when you're sick.

While Lodge residents can get their shots right here on our campus through an annual clinic visit, Sun City residents can get flu or pneumonia shots at their doctors’ offices or pharmacies. If you cannot get to your doctor's office, you may want to consider a local flu shot clinic that accepts your insurance.

Flu Prevention Crucial for Seniors

Seniors are especially vulnerable to the flu virus and prevention is something we take very seriously at Sun Valley Lodge.  If you visit us during flu season you will see signs on our doors asking you to avoid entering if you are exhibiting any symptoms.  Even though older adults are among the most likely to get the flu and are at much greater risk for complications from the flu, according to the U.S. Department of Health, only 64 percent of those over age 65 take the time to get the annual seasonal flu vaccine.

Mike Mankenberg, our Director of Nursing, is well familiar with combating the flu and thinks an annual flu vaccination is the best protection.  This year's seasonal flu vaccine will protect against three different viruses, including the H1N1 virus that caused so much illness last season.  But, Mike warns that the vaccination is not the only precaution one should take to avoid getting ill.  “It takes two weeks for the flu vaccine to start protecting you from the flu and that is a time when many people feel they can let their guards down.”

“Fever and body aches are the warning signs that distinguish flu from a cold.  We do not want anyone coming to work at the Lodge if they are suffering from either of these symptoms.  The problem is that people with the virus are contagious 24 to 48 hours before the symptoms appear, so they often do not know they are sick until it is too late”
