As soon as Thanksgiving ends, our elves pull the Christmas decorations out of the attic and get busy.  Be sure to stop by over the holidays to enjoy their fine work.

Excellence in Service at Sun Valley Lodge

Bobbi Jackson was given the Excellence in Service Award at the 2012 Aging Services of Arizona convention held at the Fort McDowell Convention Center in early June in recognition of her service to the Lodge’s Senior residents.

Bobbi retired as the Director of Nursing in our Health Care Center last year after 12 years in that position and guiding the Lodge to a perfect score on the annual Arizona Department of Health Services survey.  Bobbi still serves Lodge residents, however, in her new role as Wellness Nurse where she works 20 hours a week in our Assisted Living department.

Aging Services of Arizona is a trade association representing more than 50 not-for-profit facilities dedicated to providing quality health care, housing and services to over 12,000 elderly Arizona citizens and is affiliated with the Leading Age a Washington D.C. based national membership organization of non-profit voluntary and governmental homes and service providers for the aging.

At last year’s conference, our Director of Plant Operations, Al Pepe, won the same award.  We are extremely proud to see members of our highly dedicated staff recognized for their outstanding work.

Veterans’ Aid & Attendance

We are continuing our efforts to support our veterans and their families by expanding our Veterans’ Aid & Attendance Workshops. These workshops have helped our vets collect thousands of dollars a year to help pay for their care.

VA accredited claims agent Todd Elliott donates his time to help ensure veterans and their families receive the benefits they have earned. His next workshops are scheduled for November 20th at 10:00AM and 1:00 PM. If you are interested in attending one of these events please call (623)933-0137 to reserve a seat.

Birthday Bash!

Leora Allen celebrated her 100th birthday in style with music, cake, and lots of friends.  Happy birthday, Lee!!!

Age of Champions: November 14th, 2012 at 10 AM

We will be screening the film Age of Champions on November 14th, 2012 at 10 AM in our Wriston Lounge and we are inviting the public to join us. Age of Champions is the award-winning documentary following five competitors who sprint, leap and swim for gold at the National Senior Olympics. You’ll meet a 100 year-old tennis champion, 86 year-old pole vaulter, and rough-and-tumble basketball grandmothers as they discover the power of the human spirit and triumph over the limitations of age.
 
Age of Champions premiered to a standing ovation at the prestigious Silverdocs Film Festival and has since shown at more than 700 venues around the world. The Washington Post called the film "infectiously inspiring" and its characters have been
featured in major media outlets including ABC, CBS, PBS and NPR.

Leading Advocate for Chronic Pain Sufferers to Present at Sun Valley Lodge

Sun City, Arizona – Thursday, October 25, 2012 – Sun Valley Lodge is thrilled to offer three opportunities to meet America’s premier advocate for those suffering from chronic pain.  Helen Dearman will be visiting the Lodge on November 7^th and 8^th to discuss the special needs and concerns associated with aging and chronic pain.

The public is invited to join us on Wednesday, November 7^th and Thursday November 8^th for Helen’s presentation entitled “Living & Aging Successfully with Chronic Pain”.  Her goal is to educate and empower those with pain and to help them manage their own situations.  Both programs will begin at 9:00 AM. 

On Thursday November 8^th at 1:30, Helen will lead a roundtable discussion that will include Hospice of Arizona’s Dr. Walter Nieri and other health professionals.  This is a great opportunity to hear from and ask questions of medical personnel about living – and aging – with chronic pain.

SVL Director of Marketing Mike Kloberdanz said, “Helen is informative, informational, and inspiring.  The Lodge is absolutely thrilled to be able to offer a speaker and advocate of this level to the community.” 

Helen Dearman is the founder of the National Chronic Pain Society, radio host, frequent TV panelist, speaker, and author.  She has dedicated her life to helping people who, like herself, have to live with chronic pain. 

She has suffered with chronic pain for over three decades.  In her recent book, Pain Tamers, Helen writes about her own experiences with endless doctors' appointments, tests, procedures, medications and 11 surgeries to repair damage to her spine resulting from a fall.  Pain Tamers is a valuable compendium of information from medical professionals, sound advice, first-person accounts and resources - all aimed at informing, empowering and equipping the person living with chronic pain.
