Sun Valley Lodge Honors Long-time Employees 

Sun City, Arizona – Friday, April 25, 2014 – Sun Valley Lodge recently held its annual Years of Service ceremony to recognize the years of care many of their employees have given to the Lodge.  Among the honorees this year were Bertha Lopez and Ollie Washington who have been serving Lodge residents 1974.  Bertha started in the housekeeping department and Ollie in the kitchen during the Gerald Ford administration and have been providing residents with loving care ever since.

John Wayne in Arizona

 

Sun City, Arizona – Monday, March 17, 2014 – Sun Valley Lodge is hosting a free presentation entitled “Riding with the Duke: John Wayne in Arizona” on Thursday, March 27^th at 10:30 AM.  The program will be presented by author Greg McNamee and is part of the Lodge’s Discover Arizona series.  The series is made possible through a grant from the Arizona Humanities Council. 

 

John Wayne was born in Iowa and lived for most of his adult life in Los Angeles—or at least, he received his mail there. In reality, he considered the desert to be his true home, and he spent many years exploring, living, and investing in Arizona, where, at various points, he produced his own films, raised cattle, operated a game ranch, and was seemingly everywhere at once, turning up one day in Eagar, another in Casa Grande, another in Tucson, still another in Kingman. More than thirty years after his death, Wayne remains an iconic presence in American popular culture. In this talk, Gregory McNamee, who often writes about film and western history alike for such publications as the Encyclopaedia Britannica and The Hollywood Reporter, looks at the Duke’s long career in Arizona.

 

Greg McNamee is a writer, editor, photographer, and publishing consultant. He is the author of thirty books and of more than three thousand articles and other publications. He is a contributing editor to the Encyclopædia Britannica, a research fellow at the Southwest Center of the University of Arizona, and a lecturer in the Eller School of Management, also at the University of Arizona.

 

The Discover Arizona series consists of four programs that each feature a different aspect of Arizona history presented by an accomplished speaker.  Programs are scheduled for every Thursday in March at 10:30 AM.

A Photographic History of Arizona

 

Sun City, Arizona – Monday, March 17, 2014 – Sun Valley Lodge is hosting a free presentation entitled “A Photographic History of Arizona from Prehistory to the Present” on Thursday, March 20^th at 10:30 AM.  The program will be presented by historian Jim Turner and is part of the Lodge’s Discover Arizona series.  The series is made possible through a grant from the Arizona Humanities Council. 

 

If a picture is worth a thousand words, this program could fill a seven-volume history of Arizona. From the geological wonders of the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest to cutting-edge biotech industries and Native American art galleries, this whirlwind pictorial history tour of Arizona from prehistory to the present shows it all. In addition to beautiful landscape photography and historic site images, this engaging program addresses Arizona’s cultural diversity, mining, and the history of water use.

 

Before retiring from the Arizona Historical Society, Jim Turner worked with more than 70 museums in every corner of the state. He is co-author of the 4th-grade textbook The Arizona Story, and his pictorial history book, Arizona: Celebration of the Grand Canyon State, contains more than 530 images. Jim moved to Tucson in 1951, earned a masters degree in U.S. history from the University of Arizona, and has been researching and teaching Arizona history for more than 35 years.

Southwest Indian Rock Art Discussion

 

Sun City, Arizona – Monday, March 10, 2014 – Sun Valley Lodge is hosting a free presentation entitled “Set in Stone But Not in Meaning: Southwest Indian Rock Art” on Thursday, March 13^th at 10:30 AM.  The program will be presented by archaeologist Allen Dart and is part of the Lodge’s Discover Arizona series.  The series is made possible through a grant from the Arizona Humanities Council. 

 

Ancient Indian pictographs (rock paintings) and petroglyphs (symbols carved or pecked on rocks) are claimed by some to be forms of writing for which meanings are known. But are such claims supported by archaeology or by Native Americans themselves? Archaeologist Allen Dart illustrates southwestern petroglyphs and pictographs, and discusses how even the same rock art symbol may be interpreted differently from popular, scientific, and modern Native American perspectives.

 

Allen Dart has worked full-time and volunteered as a professional archaeologist in New Mexico and Arizona since 1975, for government, private companies, and nonprofit organizations. He is employed as an archaeologist for the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service in Phoenix. He also works part-time as Executive Director of Old Pueblo Archaeology Center, a Tucson not-for-profit organization that he founded in 1993 to provide educational and scientific programs in archaeology and culture. A Registered Professional Archaeologist, he has been a recipient of the Arizona Governor’s Award in Public Archaeology.

Discover Arizona Opens March 6^th

 

Sun City, Arizona – Friday, February 14, 2014 – Sun Valley Lodge will present the first in its four-part Discover Arizona series on Thursday, March 6^th at 10:30 AM.  The first program is entitled “They was Out to Kill Us: The Power Cabin Shootout” and will be presented by Dr. Heidi Osselaer. Ph.D.

 

Dr. Osselaer will discuss the deadliest gunfight in Arizona history.  The event took place in a remote canyon of the Galiuro Mountains in Graham County in 1918, decades after the frontier had closed.  Much of this shootout remains a mystery: Were the Power boys evading the draft during World War I? Who was ambushed that day, the lawmen or the Power family? On the surface the story looks like an Old West shootout, complete with a feud, murder mystery, and conspiracy theories galore, but it also foreshadows the emergence of a powerful federal government in the lives of average citizens.

 

Dr. Osselaer received her undergraduate degree in history at the University of California, Berkeley and her doctorate at Arizona State University. In 2009, the University of Arizona Press published her book, Winning Their Place: Arizona Women in Politics, 1883-1950, which won two Glyph Awards from the Arizona Book Publishing Association. She teaches at Arizona State University and serves on the Executive Board and the Scholars’ Committee of the Arizona Women’s Heritage Trail. She also serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Arizona History.

KPHO "Deans List"

We are thrilled to announce that our Dining Department was recently named to KPHO Channel 5’s “Dean’s List” for our outstanding marks with the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department.  The station made this announcement on the “Dirty Dining” segment of their January 9^th evening newscast.  After mentioning several “dirty” restaurants where one should use caution before dining, they then listed a few establishments with perfect scores from recent county health inspections.  Not only do we keep a spotless kitchen, but the food is great and we offer lots of healthy choices.  Stop by and ask to take look at one of our weekly menus.
