A Photographic History of Arizona
Sun
City, Arizona – Monday, March 17, 2014 – Sun Valley Lodge is hosting a free
presentation entitled “
A
Photographic History of Arizona from Prehistory to the Present” on
Thursday, March 20
th at 10:30 AM.
The program will be presented by historian Jim Turner and is part of the
Lodge’s Discover Arizona series.
The
series is made possible through a grant from the Arizona Humanities Council.
If a picture is worth a thousand
words, this program could fill a seven-volume history of Arizona. From the
geological wonders of the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest to cutting-edge
biotech industries and Native American art galleries, this whirlwind pictorial
history tour of Arizona from prehistory to the present shows it all. In
addition to beautiful landscape photography and historic site images, this
engaging program addresses Arizona’s cultural diversity, mining, and the history
of water use.
Before retiring from the Arizona
Historical Society, Jim Turner worked with more than 70 museums in every corner
of the state. He is co-author of the 4
th-grade textbook
The Arizona Story, and his pictorial
history book,
Arizona: Celebration of the Grand Canyon State, contains
more than 530 images. Jim moved to Tucson in 1951, earned a masters degree in
U.S. history from the University of Arizona, and has been researching and
teaching Arizona history for more than 35 years.
The
Discover Arizona series consists of four programs that each feature
a different aspect of Arizona history presented by an accomplished
speaker.
Programs are scheduled for
every Thursday in March at 10:30 AM.
All of the programs are free and
open to the public.
Sun Valley Lodge is
located at 12415 N. 103
