General Crook and the Sierra Madre Adventure of 1883

The second installment of the Sun Valley Lodge Discover Arizona series will be held on Thursday, March 12th at 2:00 PM with a presentation entitled “General Crook and the Sierra Madre Adventure of 1883.” The program will be presented by Dale Curtis Miles.

The Crook expedition was the first to convince the Chiricahua Apaches under Geronimo that surrender was necessary, since their mountain sanctuary was no longer safe from U.S. troops. In this presentation, Miles draws on interviews with elders to explain the use of Apache scouts and mule trains, which helped make this campaign a success.

Mr. Miles was born on the San Carlos Apache tribal area and was their first tribal historian. Mr. Miles has devoted his life to learning the history and culture of the Apache peoples while studying at ASU and NAU. He has worked with the Arizona Historical Society, the Smithsonian Institute of the American Indian, and tribal elders as well to gain a traditional view of tribal life-ways and stories. In addition, he has written articles for Native People and True West magazines. He is currently working on a book on the image of the Apache people in film and media.

The Discover Arizona series consists of six programs that each feature a different aspect of Arizona history and are presented by an accomplished speaker. The series opened on March 5th with a discussion of the Gunfight at OK Corral and is sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council. All of the programs are free and open to the public. Gunfight at the OK Corral

Sun Valley Lodge will open its Spring Discover Arizona series on Thursday, March 5th at 2:00 PM with a presentation on the Gunfight at the OK Corral. The program will be led by Dr. John Ziegler of Tombstone. Dr. Ziegler is a retired professor and historian.

Through research in legal documents, photographs, diaries, newspapers, and scholarly studies, Ziegler examines the confrontation as it looked in the late fall of 1881, and contends that the gunfight centered on the political and financial control of Tombstone. The shootout marked the climax of a power struggle between the "world unfenced" of the cowboys and the law-and-order world of the town-centered Earps. Contrary to what novelists and screenwriters have portrayed, Tombstone in 1881 was evenly divided in its sympathies.

Dr. Nieri Named New Medical Director

Dr. Walter Nieri will be taking over as the Lodge’s Medical Director beginning March 1st. Dr. Nierie is already well known to many Lodge residents and their families because of affiliation with Hospice of Arizona where he also fills the role of Medical Director.

SVL Executive Director Michael Fahey said, “I am extremely happy to welcome Dr. Nieri to his new role at the Lodge. He has been a great friend to our residents and staff for several years and truly understands what Sun Valley Lodge is all about.”
Dr. Nieri is the Program Director for the Banner Health/St. Joseph’s Geriatric Fellowship Program; a program designed to educate young physicians to become geriatric doctors. And, he is the Director of the Sun Health Research Institute's Center for Healthy Aging in Sun City.

Dr. Nieri is a board member and past president of the Arizona Geriatrics Society. He also was a member of the Governor’s Council on Aging and End of Life.

Radio Show Visits Sun Valley Lodge

Sun City, Arizona – Thursday, January 15, 2009 – Popular Phoenix radio show We’re There for You will do a live remote broadcast from Sun Valley Lodge on Monday, January 26th from 3:00 to 4:00 PM. The program can be heard on AM 1100 KFNX.

The show will feature a discussion about choosing senior care and various levels of accommodation including independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing. Sun Valley Lodge staff members and residents will be part of the panel discussion along with Hospice of Arizona medical staff.

Lodge Residents Taking Part in International Study

Several residents have been taking part in a research study of the life experiences of individuals over the age of 85. The project is being conducted by Leann Stadtlander, PhD and Martha Giles, PhD. Both Dr. Stadtlander and Dr. Giles are professors at Walden University in Minneapolis.

The research is designed to explore issues and triumphs of adults over 85. The study uses interviews with participants to gather data and determine common experiences in individuals over the age of 85.

Tra Mayes is serving as the research assistant at Sun Valley Lodge. Tra is in the Graduate Psychology Doctoral Program at Walden University and has been interviewing residents several times a week.
